The Potential Fight Between Shakur Stevenson and Joe Cordina: A Risky Move

BY BOXING HIT STAFF-

The talks regarding a potential fight between WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson and former IBF 130-lb champion Joe Cordina have been confirmed by promoter Eddie Hearn. Cordina, who boasts a record of 17-1 with 9 KOs, is looking to make his debut at 135 for this bout. However, despite the early-stage discussions, no agreement has been reached yet. At 32 years old, Cordina seems eager for the challenge, while Stevenson appears excited about the prospect of facing him. Stevenson had initially planned to defend his title against #1 WBC William Zepeda, but this has been delayed as Zepeda aims to fight him in February, coinciding with Terence Crawford’s next bout.

A Brave Move by Cordina

It is indeed a bold move on Cordina’s part to move up in weight class and take on one of the top fighters in the lightweight division in Shakur Stevenson. Known for his willingness to take risks, Cordina sees this fight as a challenge he is ready to embrace. A victory for Cordina over Stevenson could potentially set him up for a major showdown with the division’s top dog, Gervonta Davis. This would undoubtedly be a huge fight in the world of boxing.

For Shakur Stevenson, this fight presents an opportunity to secure his second title defense of the WBC title before facing William Zepeda in February. Given the risky nature of this upcoming bout, Stevenson must maintain his focus and ensure he is at the top of his game. Cordina’s previous defeat, a knockout in the eighth round by Anthony Cacace last May, raises concerns about his ability to compete at the higher weight class. It is believed that Cordina may have been weight drained during that fight, indicating that he should have moved up in weight earlier. However, the financial incentive may have been too enticing for him to make that decision at the time.

Eddie Hearn has yet to confirm whether he will be signing the free agent Shakur Stevenson to his Matchroom company. Nonetheless, all signs point to a potential collaboration between the two parties. As talks progress and negotiations continue, boxing fans eagerly await the official announcement of this high-stakes showdown between Shakur Stevenson and Joe Cordina. Whether Cordina’s risky move pays off or Stevenson successfully defends his title remains to be seen, but one thing is certain – this fight has the makings of an epic battle in the ring.
