David Morrell Criticizes Canelo Alvarez’s Choice of Opponent

BY BOXING HIT STAFF-

David Morrell, the unbeaten former WBA ‘regular’ super middleweight champion, has strongly criticized Canelo Alvarez’s decision to choose Edgar Berlanga as his next opponent for the title defense of his three super middleweight belts. Despite Berlanga’s 22-0 record, Morrell believes that Canelo deliberately selected a weak opponent in Berlanga, who has not faced top-tier opposition in his eight-year professional career. Morrell feels that Canelo should have considered fighting him or David Benavidez when they were competing at 168. Throughout the past four years, Canelo has been highly selective about his opponents, only facing one high-level opponent in Dmitry Bivol, which many viewed as a cherry-pick gone wrong.

In an upcoming match, Morrell is set to fight Radivoje “Hot Rod” Kalajdzic for the vacant WBA World light heavyweight title. This fight is scheduled to take place this Saturday at the BMO Stadium in Los Angeles and will be broadcast on DAZN PPV. Morrell aims to secure the WBA belt and hopes to line up bouts against Benavidez and the winner of the Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol fight on October 12th. Expressing his discontent with Canelo’s choice of opponent, Morrell labeled the upcoming fight as “bulls***,” indicating that Berlanga is an easy opponent for Canelo, compared to the challenging opposition Morrell himself and Benavidez would have posed.

David Morrell bluntly criticized Canelo’s recent choice of opponents, including Jaime Munguia, Jermell Charlo, John Ryder, Caleb Plant, Gennadiy Golovkin, and Billy Joe Saunders. When asked about his upcoming opponent, Kalajdzic, Morrell did not consider him to be one of his toughest opponents to date, emphasizing that no fight is easy. Despite the difference in weight classes, Morrell remains confident in his abilities to secure a victory. Kalajdzic, who suffered a knockout defeat against Artur Beterbiev in 2019, is not expected to pose a significant challenge for Morrell on Saturday.

In order to capture the attention of fans and establish his presence in the boxing world, Morrell understands the importance of securing a knockout victory. With a stacked card featuring top fighters, Morrell recognizes the opportunity to showcase his skills to a broader audience, especially to casual boxing fans who may not be familiar with his fighting style. Expressing his readiness to face any opponent, including Benavidez at 175, Morrell remains determined to make a statement in the ring and prove his worth as a formidable competitor.
