2024 was a turbulent year for Tim Tszyu. In 2025 there is a possibility of a showdown between Keith Thurman and Tszyu. A summer fight that, if it materializes, promises to reignite the careers of both fighters. Originally slated for March 30 of the previous year, their clash fell apart when Thurman was sidelined due to a biceps injury. With the potential for a non-pay-per-view (PPV) event now on the table, fans are left to ponder the implications of this matchup on both fighters’ careers. Thurman’s upcoming bout against Brock Jarvis in Sydney on March 12 will serve as a critical test for him, especially given his recent injury history.
At 36, Keith Thurman holds a record of 30 wins, 1 loss, and 22 knockouts. However, his career has been marred by inactivity and health issues. Since 2017, the boxer has competed merely three times, raising concerns about his longevity and readiness to face elite competition like Tszyu. Even if he emerges victorious against Jarvis, lingering doubts remain about his ability to maintain form due to a history of physical setbacks. For an athlete in such a precarious position, the proposed summer matchup against Tszyu may feel rushed, as he grapples with keeping his body healthy amid the demands of the ring.
In contrast, Tim Tszyu’s career has taken a hit lately, with a record of 24 wins and 2 losses—17 of those wins by knockout. His recent performances have left fans and pundits questioning his readiness to clash with a stalwart like Thurman. Tszyu’s losses to Sebastian Fundora and Bakhram Murtazaliev were troubling, particularly his brutal third-round knockout against Murtazaliev, where he faced the canvas multiple times. The hiccup against Fundora, despite the unfortunate cut, may not be indicative of a declining skill set. However, the knockout defeat raises legitimate concerns about Tszyu’s potential effectiveness against a fighter like Thurman, who previously held a stronger title in the junior middleweight division.
Perhaps the most pressing issue surrounding a match between Thurman and Tszyu is public perception. For younger boxing fans, Keith Thurman is an outdated figure—a has-been whose recent inactivity has diminished his status. With fans increasingly disconnected from Thurman’s past accomplishments, the allure of his fights has waned. The general consensus among older boxing enthusiasts is not much better; many have written him off after a stinging loss to the aging Manny Pacquiao in 2019. Tszyu, while still recognized, must contend with the fact that his recent performances have not helped his profile. Both fighters need compelling storylines to sell this matchup; otherwise, they risk putting on a lackluster event that may struggle to capture attention.
As the summer date looms, the stakes are high for both athletes. A victory for Thurman could signal a resurgence and perhaps a chance for him to contend once again, potentially setting up more lucrative fights in the future. For Tszyu, a win against a seasoned opponent could reinvigorate his career after a challenging period. While the matchup may initially entice a segment of boxing fans, it remains to be seen whether it can draw the enthusiasm needed from a broader audience still hoping for the next generation of compelling fighters to emerge. Ultimately, their strategies inside the ring will reflect their readiness to reclaim their former glories or cement their fading legacies.
